FAQs
This web site is an historical record of the Objective 1 Programme 2000 - 2008 in Ceredigion (and as such it is now dormant). For current European funding enquires please contact ewro@ceredigion.gov.uk.
What is Objective 1?-
European funding awarded to those areas in the European Union whose GDP is less than 75% of the EU average.
-
The 15 local authority areas of West Wales and the Valleys will together receive Objective 1 funding of over £1.2billion from the year 2000 through to the end of 2006.
- The main purpose of Objective 1 is to increase the economic prosperity of the area in the long term. To achieve this, money is available for 6 stated areas of “Priority” activity:
1.
Expanding and Developing Small and Medium Sized Enterprises
(SMEs)
2. Developing Innovation and the Knowledge Based Economy
3. Community Economic Regeneration
4. Improving Skills and Learning Opportunities in order to Promote
Employability
5. Rural Development and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources
6. Strategic Infrastructure Development
Who can apply?
Any legally constituted body from the public, private, voluntary
and community sectors are potentially eligible to apply for
European funding.
The private sector can apply for Objective 1 money directly if it can be demonstrated that the project will result in a wider economic benefit for the area. However, it is more likely that individual businesses will access funding through grant schemes operated by intermediary bodies.
Similarly, voluntary organisations may find it easier to access Objective 1 money through grant schemes established by agencies working in the sector.
How do we apply?
The first step is to contact the Ewro Team for advice on the
best way forward. If your idea meets the criteria of the Ceredigion
Local Strategy, we will assist in developing your project and
completing the application form for submission to WEFO. WEFO
assesses the application in consultation with the Thematic Advisory
Group and advises the applicant directly of its decision.
More detailed information on the application process is in the 2005 Factsheet, available here or from the Ewro Team.
What happens when the funding stops?
Projects can continue to draw down their approved funding until
30 June 2008.
Some projects, such as training provision, have a specific time frame for completion. Others, such as the establishment of new businesses, are intended to become self-sustaining, and will continue to benefit the County’s economy after the Objective 1 Programme is over.
With the accession of 10 new member states to the European Union in May 2004, financial support arrangements will naturally change. Under current EU proposals, it is likely that West Wales and the Valleys will still receive around 74% of full funding for the 6 years after the programme ends. This would be in gradually reducing amounts, beginning at 85% in 2007 and tapering down to 60% in 2013.
